Commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia

Reportedly, the US President Donald Trump signed a new US federal budget for the current financial year, in the text of which points are written about the protection of the territorial integrity of Georgia. The House of Representatives of the US Congress approved and submitted a budget for consideration by D. Trump on May 5.

The item entitled "Occupation of the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and the Tskhinval region / South Ossetia" prohibits the provision of support to any country in the world that recognizes the independence of the self-proclaimed republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. State agencies of the United States are prohibited from taking actions aimed at supporting the Russian occupation of these regions. In addition, the law requires the US Treasury Department to develop the necessary instructions for international financial institutions in order to exclude the possibility of implementing any programs (loans, debts, guarantees) that violate the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

It is regrettable that the new American administration chose a deadlock way of supporting Georgia's absurd claims, which presuppose an even greater blockade and international isolation of the Republic of Abkhazia. Exposing themselves as defenders of freedom and human rights throughout the world, US leaders are actually pursuing an undisguised policy of double standards, putting into practice political and financial pressure on countries that are not favorable to them, and by applying all kinds of restrictions and sanctions against those citizens who are not welcome to them.

Washington should be aware that such a practice of "encouraging" the state, which in 2008 unleashed a war in South Ossetia, adopts discriminatory laws against foreign citizens, such as the law on the occupied territories, cannot lead to anything good.

It is also necessary to clearly understand that only recognition and adequate perception of the current political realities in the South Caucasus can facilitate dialogue between the parties. The fueling of revanchist sentiments in Georgia and the policy of international isolation of Abkhazia only make it difficult to achieve this goal and nullify the efforts made by the participants of the Geneva discussions.
