On the 40th round of the Geneva discussions

From June 20 to 21, 2017, the 40th round of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in the Caucasus took place in Geneva.

The Abkhaz delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia Daur Kove. At the 40th round of the Geneva discussions, the focus was traditionally on working on a joint statement of commitment to the non-use of force, which would be an important step towards signing a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force between Georgia and Abkhazia and Georgia and South Ossetia as the main goal of Geneva discussions.

During the discussions, a number of issues important for the Republic of Abkhazia were discussed, an objective assessment was given to the declarations acceptable to Georgia that distort the real situation in the Republic of Abkhazia, accepted by international structures, such as the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO. Representatives of the Republic of Abkhazia, the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation expressed concern over the growing activation of Georgia-NATO cooperation.

Special attention was paid to the adoption on June 1 of the current year at the meeting of the UN General Assembly with Georgia's submission of a politicized draft resolution on refugees. Taking into account this unconstructive approach of the Georgian side, the Abkhaz and South Ossetian delegations in both working groups distributed a joint statement denoting the inadmissibility of discussing refugee issues in the framework of the second working group in the format of the Geneva discussions, taking into account the fact that this issue is periodically submitted by the Georgian side at other international sites on which the Republic of Abkhazia is not represented.

The adoption of a joint statement of commitment to the non-use of force, the draft of which was approved by all participants in the Geneva discussions in the first working group, was again thwarted due to the unconstructive and uncompromising position of the Georgian side.

The next 41st round of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia is scheduled for October 10-11, 2017.
